In November 2023 the Victorian Coroner’s Court held an inquiry in the deaths of five young trans women during the Covid lockdown period. This was a three-day hearing, with family members, police, medical experts and LGBTIQA+ community organisations all providing submissions and giving evidence.
As the leading national LGBTIQA+ suicide prevention organisation, Switchboard Victoria was invited to give evidence at the Inquest and were present for all three days.
One of the most significant and comprehensive engagements on the health and wellbeing of the trans and gender diverse community, this presentation offers commentary from those who gave evidence at the hearing, and subsequent reflection on the coroner’s findings. It offers sophisticated insight on system reform and whole of government and community approach to preventing suicides among the trans and gender diverse community.
